Sorghum stalks after grain harvest are among the hardest and most lignin-rich residue crops a small square baler will encounter. Thick woody stems, variable field conditions and the wide range of sorghum types \u2014 from standard grain sorghum to sweet sorghum and forage sorghum \u2014 each demand different approaches. This guide covers the timing, field preparation, equipment requirements and market options for sorghum stalk baling.<\/p>\n
Grain sorghum stalks at harvest maturity are woody, with stem diameters of 15\u201330mm and dense lignin-rich cell walls that resist mechanical processing more aggressively than corn stover. Forage sorghum and sweet sorghum (sorghum-sudangrass hybrids) produce taller plants with slightly softer stem tissue at the same growth stage, but in any sorghum type the lower one-third of the stalk \u2014 where the stem is oldest and most lignified \u2014 creates the highest processing load for the pickup, shredder and plunger systems.<\/p>\n
Sorghum plants also tiller extensively \u2014 a single sorghum plant at harvest can have 2\u20134 secondary stems at the base, producing a dense root cluster that can cause pickup system jams when the baler attempts to pull the cluster free of the soil. Setting the pickup height slightly higher than you would for corn stover (3\u20135cm above soil surface rather than 1\u20133cm) and mowing the stalk base before baling reduces the cluster-pull problem in heavily tillered stands.<\/p>\n
