Square Baler Winter Storage Guide
The work done in the final hour of the baling season determines how the machine arrives at next season first session. Crop residue holds moisture, twine absorbs winter damp, bare metal rusts at exposed surfaces and un-greased bearings develop pitting during months of static storage. The storage procedure in this guide prevents all of these mechanisms and allows the pre-season service to focus on inspection rather than remediation.

Why End-of-Season Preparation Determines Next Season Reliability
The damage that accumulates on an unprepared baler during winter storage is quiet and progressive. Moisture condenses in bearing cavities during cold nights and does not fully evaporate during brief warm periods — leading to surface pitting on bearing races that appears as a gritty roughness when the bearing is rotated by hand in spring. Crop chaff left in the knotter mechanism retains moisture and accelerates rust at the precision surfaces of the cam follower and bill hook mechanism. Drive chain links without fresh oil form a rust bond between the pin and roller that produces stiff links — requiring replacement rather than re-lubrication in spring.
Each of these failures has a straightforward prevention: the storage procedure takes 60–90 minutes and costs only the time and a small quantity of consumables. The remediation costs — a new bearing set, a knotter mechanism clean-up, a drive chain — typically cost 10–20 times the investment of the storage procedure. Completing the storage procedure at the end of every season is one of the clearest economic returns in farm maintenance.
Step 1: Twine Removal — Do This First
Remove all twine from the machine as the very first storage step — before cleaning, before lubricating. This includes: both spools from the spool holders, the threaded twine from the needle eyes, the path from spool to needle through every guide eyelet, and any free ends or remnants in the knotter mechanism and bale chute area.
The reason to remove twine first: polypropylene twine that remains on the machine absorbs atmospheric moisture during winter storage and loses tensile strength without any visible change in appearance. A spool left on an outdoor machine through a wet winter may lose 15–25% of its rated knot strength by spring, producing twine breaks in the first session from stock that looks unused but is structurally compromised. Twine left threaded through guide eyelets can also trap moisture at the eyelet contact point, accelerating corrosion in those areas.
Store all removed twine spools in a sealed container or in a dry, dark building away from UV sources. Spools left on wooden pallets or shelving in a covered barn are acceptable — spools stored on concrete floors are not, because moisture wicks upward through the cardboard core. Label the container with the spool knot strength rating and the season of purchase to manage stock rotation in subsequent seasons.
Step 2: Machine Cleaning

Why Cleaning Before Greasing Matters
Greasing a dirty machine — applying fresh grease over accumulated chaff and soil — does not protect the machine. The crop material holds moisture under the grease layer and continues to accelerate corrosion. Cleaning must precede all storage lubrication to ensure grease is applied to clean, dry metal surfaces where it can form the intended protective film.
Cleaning Procedure
STEP1
Blow out with compressed air from the top of the machine downward. Pay particular attention to: the knotter mechanism and guard interior, the pickup reel between the tine rows, the feeder inlet and fork mechanism, and the bale chamber interior.
STEP2
Wash with low-pressure water to remove soil from the pickup and frame. Avoid high-pressure washing directly at bearing seals and electrical connections — the high pressure can force water through seals. Low-pressure rinse from the frame outward is sufficient.
STEP3
Allow to dry completely — at least 4 hours in dry conditions — before proceeding to lubrication. Greasing a wet machine traps moisture under the grease in bearing cavities. Dry the machine in a sheltered location with airflow if possible.
Step 3: Storage Lubrication — All Fittings
The storage greasing round is a full-machine lubrication — all fittings, not just the daily critical ones. This is separate from and in addition to the pre-season service greasing. The purpose of storage greasing is corrosion protection over the months-long storage period, not operational lubrication.
Work through every fitting systematically using the zone map from the lubrication guide (G4): Zone 1 knotter fittings, Zone 2 pickup fittings, Zone 3 feeder fittings, Zone 4 plunger and drive fittings, Zone 5 frame and star wheel fittings. Apply 2–3 strokes per fitting — enough to displace any moisture from the previous session but not enough to force grease past seals. The grease applied at storage will be supplemented by the pre-season service greasing in spring.
After greasing all fittings, also grease the plunger guide rail surfaces directly — apply grease with a brush or rag to the top and bottom rail faces that the plunger slides on, as these surfaces do not have nipple fittings and require manual application.
Step 4: Rust Protection for Bare Metal Surfaces
Several surfaces on a square baler are bare metal without paint protection — the plunger face, knife blade edges, needle tips, chain link surfaces and the exposed sections of the pickup tine attachment points. These surfaces rust during wet winter storage without a protective film.
Plunger face: wipe with a cloth lightly oiled with light machine oil or rust inhibitor spray. The flat steel face of the plunger will develop surface rust during a wet winter without protection — the rust is easily wiped off in spring but if left until after the season this can accelerate pitting of the face at the wear pattern.
Knife blade edges: apply rust inhibitor spray or a thin film of oil to both knife blade edges. Rust on a knife blade edge changes its cutting geometry — a lightly rusted blade may still cut but not cleanly, producing the ragged rope-end symptoms that mimic a dull blade.
Needle tips: apply rust inhibitor spray. The needle tip is a precision surface — rust pitting on the tip face changes the twine delivery geometry at the bill hook slightly, which can contribute to inconsistent knot formation in spring after storage.
Drive chains: apply fresh chain oil liberally to all exposed chain links. Chain oil provides better rust protection than grease for open chain surfaces and penetrates the pin-roller interface to displace moisture from the tightest clearances in the chain joint.
Step 5: Mechanical Checks Before Storage

Gearbox Oil Condition and Level
Drain a sample of gearbox oil onto a white cloth. If it appears milky, contains metal particles or is well past its change interval, change the oil before storage. Contaminated oil left in the gearbox over winter continues to degrade and corrode internal surfaces. Clean oil in the gearbox enters spring in better condition than contaminated oil that was changed at the pre-season service.
Shear Bolt Status
Confirm the shear bolt is present and is the correct specification grade. If the season involved multiple shear bolt replacements, replace the current bolt with a fresh one before storage — confirm the grade against the operator manual and store 10 replacement bolts of the correct specification with the machine.
Drive Chain Tension and Condition
Reduce the drive chain tensioner slightly below operating tension for storage — a chain held at full operating tension for months can develop stress relaxation in the tensioner spring. Check chain elongation; if at or near replacement threshold, order the replacement chain during winter so it is on hand for the pre-season service rather than waiting for the service day.
Parts to Order During Winter
Record any components identified as borderline at the end-of-season mechanical check. Order these parts during winter when there is no time pressure and confirm delivery before the pre-season service date. Waiting until the service day to order parts results in the service being split — inspection one day, completion later — losing the time efficiency of a single service session.
Step 6: Guard Cover Closure and Storage Position
Close all guard covers and secure them before storage. Guards closed during storage prevent: birds and rodents nesting in the knotter mechanism (a common and destructive problem in balers stored in barns); weather exposure to the precision knotter surfaces; and the accumulated dust and debris that settles on open mechanism surfaces over months of static storage.
If the baler is stored on level ground, the pickup should be raised to its transport position to prevent the gauge wheels from sitting under load for months. The bale chute should be in the down position with no tension on the hydraulic or spring-loaded system. Remove the PTO shaft from the tractor and store separately if the tractor is used for other tasks during the off-season — a PTO shaft left connected to an unused machine in a damp environment can develop corrosion at the splined connection that makes spring disengagement difficult.
Indoor vs Outdoor Storage: The Difference in Machine Life
Indoor Storage (Barn or Equipment Shed)
Frame longevity: paint at weld edges and frame joints is protected from wet-dry cycling that causes edge corrosion and eventual frame weakening. Machines stored indoors consistently show substantially less frame corrosion after 10+ seasons than outdoor-stored machines.
Rubber and plastic: UV radiation from direct sunlight degrades rubber seals, plastic guards and wiring insulation. Indoor storage eliminates this degradation entirely.
Cleaning requirement: clean the machine before storing indoors — a dirty machine stored in a barn concentrates crop residue moisture against metal surfaces, which in a barn environment without wind drying takes longer to evaporate than outdoors.
Outdoor Storage (With Correct Tarpaulin)
Tarpaulin requirements: use a full-coverage machine-specific tarp rated for the machine dimensions. The tarp must cover the machine to ground level on all sides to prevent wind-driven rain from entering at the base. Secure against wind — a tarp that lifts in wind is worse than no tarp because it traps moisture underneath.
Breathability: a completely sealed waterproof cover without breathability traps condensation under the cover, accelerating moisture damage. Use a breathable waterproof tarp rather than an impermeable plastic sheet.
Storage position: park the machine on firm ground, not in a low-lying area that collects standing water. The frame should not be sitting in water contact at any point during the storage period.
Spring Recommissioning Checklist

Complete the following before the first session of each new season. This is in addition to the full annual pre-season service (see G1 maintenance guide):
SPRING 1
Remove and inspect the tarpaulin for damage before storage ends. Note any areas where moisture penetrated despite the tarp and inspect those areas of the machine for corrosion. Store the tarp where it can dry and be reused next season.
SPRING 2
Inspect for rodent or bird nesting in the knotter mechanism, feeder inlet and bale chamber — even in covered storage. Remove any nesting material before beginning the grease round, as nesting can clog fittings and trap moisture at mechanism surfaces.
SPRING 3
Grease all fittings again — the spring greasing supplements the end-of-season storage greasing and ensures operating-grade lubrication is in place for the first session.
SPRING 4
Re-tension the drive chain to operating specification and apply fresh chain oil. The chain tension may have reduced from the slightly-loosened storage position or from spring temperature expansion.
SPRING 5
Install fresh twine — use stock from the current season purchase or from sealed storage. Thread correctly per the operator manual diagram. Do not use stock that was left on the machine over winter or stored outside.
SPRING 6
Complete the full annual pre-season service (inspection of all components against specification, replacement of annual wear items, 20-bale verification test) before declaring the machine ready for the season.

The minimum storage procedure in a dry climate is: remove twine, clean the machine, apply rust inhibitor to bare metal surfaces, close all guards. What rust protection product should I use on the plunger face and knife blades?+
